Job Description for Counselor at Camp Hollymont for Girls

Qualifications:

  • Since counselors must live with the campers, supervise their activities, and meet or assist with individual camper personal needs, counselors must be female.
  • Counselors must be 18 years of age and completed their freshman year in college or have the work/camp experience along with the leadership skills to demonstrate the maturity and skill level necessary to complete her job.
  • Counselors must exhibit an ability and willingness to meet staff qualifications listed in the staff guidelines.
  • Since counselors are responsible for campers in an emergency situation, counselors must be physically able to accomplish the evacuation of campers from a three-story building.
  • Counselors must be physically and emotionally able to cope with the stresses associated with the 24-hour care of minors.

Lodging:

All campers and staff members live in two lodges, Laurel and Kehaya.

A cluster usually consists of four rooms. Three rooms are for campers (2-4 per room) and one room for staff. Depending on the age of the campers and our ratio requirements, there may be another counselor, assistant counselor, and/or a counselor-in-training in the room with you.

Directly Responsible to:

  • A Head Counselor who supervises your interaction with the campers during hall and night activities.
  • The Skills Coordinator and Skills Facilitator who administer the skills program, answer questions, make/approve skill purchases, and solve problems relating to the skills.

Responsibilities:

A Hollymont counselor is responsible for the supervision of a cluster of girls.

  1. Wake up your campers and make sure they get to breakfast and morning watch.
  2. Help the girls clean their rooms and keep track of their personal items.
  3. Help get the girls to skills on time.
  4. Participate in an assigned hall monitoring rotation during rest hour and bedtime.
  5. Actively participate in all evening activities and make sure y our campers are in attendance and participating in all evening activities.
  6. Prepare nightly devotions for your cluster.

A Hollymont counselor participates in the skill program.

  1. You will be assigned several skills to teach or assist.
    (Hiring preference given to those who can teach skills)
  2. Must arrive at the skill site prior to campers.
  3. Must be prepared with fun activities for a full 50 minute class. You will be teaching between four and five classes a day.
  4. Consult with the Skill Coordinator regarding lesson plans, material purchases, etc.
  5. Keep a daily attendance roll and report any unexcused absences to the camp office.

*In all camp activities the Hollymont counselor is responsible for modeling the enthusiasm and cooperative participation that we expect from campers.

2008 Hollymont Counselor-In-Training Program

The counselor-in-training program at Camp Hollymont is designed to provide both instructional and practical experience in camp life. This experience gives the CIT a deeper understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a counselor. A CIT has the privilege of sharing herself with others through the training program and in all aspects of camp life.

RECEIPT OF A CIT APPLICATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOUR ACCEPTANCE INTO THE CIT PROGRAM.

We have a limited number of CIT positions available in each session. Our selection emphasis is quality of quantity. We consider a candidate's viability in both the short term (serving as a CIT) and the long term (serving as a counselor).

CIT applicants will be asked to indicate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices for sessions on the application.

While we strongly recommend that applications be completed and returned immediately upon receipt of this material, we reserve the right to hold applications and make selections that best fit the needs of the camp community. We also reserve the right to limit the number of two-week, and four-week CITs within each session.

Qualifications:

Age/School year - must be a rising junior or senior in high school and/or 16 years of age by the end of the Hollymont summer.

We consider a CIT candidate's personal relationship with Jesus Christ, her personality, her willingness to serve, and, when applicable, her previous performance at Hollymont.

Ability and willingness to meet staff qualifications listed in the staff guidelines. CITs work closely with campers and greatly influence them. Therefore, CITs must be positive role models.

We consider a candidate's viability in both the short term (serving as a CIT) and the long term (serving as a Hollymont counselor).

Directly Responsible To:

The CIT Director will provide leadership and oversight for the CIT team. Additionally, each CIT will be a part of the hall leadership team and will be responsible to her counselor and head counselor.

Responsibilities:

  1. Opening and closing day preparations (early morning prior to check-in/check-out).
  2. Assist counselor with cluster.
    1. Get girls up in the morning and to bed at night.
    2. Monitor rest hour and after lights out.
    3. Actively participate in cluster devotions as guided by the cluster counselor.
  3. Meet daily schedule.
    1. Breakfast, CIT meal times and serving times
    2. CIT meeting/planning period
    3. CIT devotion period
    4. One or two work periods including mailroom and canteen.
    5. One or two periods assisting with skills, program activity preparations, and other duties as assigned.
  4. Conduct Sunday evening vespers.
  5. Assist with am/pm night activities.
  6. Serve as a Camp Hollymont representative to arriving campers and visiting prospective campers and their parents.
  7. Assistant camp staff with between session campers (June 27-29, July 11-13, July 25-27).

We strongly recommend that you apply immediately upon receipt of this material. On your CIT application, please indicate your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices for sessions.

You will be notified by mail once a decision has been made regarding your application for the CIT program. If accepted, you will have fourteen (14) days from the date of your notification to send in your deposit ($850) and secure your slot. If your plans change and you must cancel after you are confirmed, your deposit is refundable until April 1, 2008, except for a $100 processing fee.
